James A. Keehn, CPA, CGMA

James is a tax partner with nearly 30 years of experience providing tax compliance, reporting, planning, consulting, and litigation support to a broad range of clients. He is know for taking a proactive, strategic, and cost-effective approach to tax planning, helping clients reduce effective tax rates, manage risk, and navigate increasingly complex federal and state tax requirements. James focuses on oil and gas, manufacturing, and other asset-intensive businesses, as well as high-net-worth individuals and families, trusts, and closely held companies with with complex multi-state and pass-through structures. James has developed deep expertise in oil and gas taxation, advising clients involved in upstream and downstream activities with unique and challenging tax considerations. His experience includes the taxation of natural resources, from mineral interest acquisitions to the treatment of intangible drilling and development costs and the calculation of allowable depletion deductions on a property-by-property basis. In addition, he advises clients on like-kind exchanges, partnership and real estate transactions, and business restructurings.

James also advises clients on cryptocurrency and digital asset tax compliance and planning, including reporting requirements, transactional tax consequences, and the integration of digital assets into broader tax, investment, and business strategies. He helps clients navigate the rapidly evolving regulatory and reporting landscape surrounding virtual currencies, ensuring accurate compliance while identifying planning opportunities where available.

James joined HoganTaylor's predecessor firm, Hogan & Slovacek, in 2006 as a Senior Tax Staff member and currently serves as Tax Service Area Leader for the firm. 

Representative Experience
  • Represented business and individual clients before the Internal Revenue Service and various state tax authorities regarding a wide variety of examinations on income tax returns
  • Assisted clients in obtaining significant research & development credits, formation of interest charge domestic international sales corporation (IC-DISC) entity as a vehicle for export tax savings, incentives available to manufacturing and production activities through the Section 199 Domestic Production Activities Deduction (DPAD), and tax savings from cost segregation studies
  • Assisted client in sale of an oilfield company with a Section 338(h)(10) election. The election is to treat the purchase and sale of the stock of a target corporation as the purchase and sale of the assets of the target corporation, followed by a distribution of the proceeds of the deemed asset sale to the selling shareholders, after which the target corporation ceases to exist
  • Assisted clients in the sale of oil and gas leasehold property in regards to Section 1254 which requires certain gains on sale of oil and gas interest to be recaptured as ordinary income that pertain to intangible drilling costs, development expenditures, and depletion
  • Counseled clients on tax planning, especially as it pertains to lessening their exposure to both federal and state income tax
